What is the difference between a predictive dialer and an auto dialer?

Though both a predictive dialer and an auto dialer operate similarly, they have very different outcomes. An auto dialer simply dials phone numbers and connects the call with the agent if someone picks up their phone, removing the need for manual dialing.

On the other hand, a predictive dialer is a type of auto dialer with a much higher dialing rate that dials multiple numbers simultaneously and then uses an automated call distribution system to connect answered calls to the next available agent. This process of call routing seeks to maximize the amount of outbound calls and reach as many customers as possible.

  • Answer ratio of the past hour/specified period of time.
  • The total number of agents logged in.
  • AHT of Agents ( talk time + Wrap up time) 

The average number of breaks taken by agents.

Predictive dialers are used most frequently for debt collection calls.  However, they are also used for telemarketing, outbound sales, and for conducting market research or for proactive customer support such as notifying customers about outages, compromised credit cards, or even new offers.

A predictive dialer is not illegal; however, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) restricts advertisers and marketers from using any autodialer, including predictive dialers from placing calls without achieving prior express consent from the call recipient.

When using a predictive dialer, ensure that you use DNC scrubbing so you do not inadvertently call anyone registered on a Do Not Call list. You can also mask customers’ phone numbers to ensure data privacy.

Since Predicitve dialers connect to more than one call recipient per agent, sometimes it needs to drop calls after connecting. This leads to poor experience and complianec issues. Also, if calls connect before the agent is free,  the call recipient hears an awkward silence, also known as the telemarketer gap. To prevent this, follow our best practices or switch to a power dialer mode.
